Brief Introduction
Traveling Around Taipei With Garbage Trucks is a performance project with its final presentation happening in streets alongside working garbage trucks. There were two types of performance: street performances and a program called Story Bus. With street performances, 3 garbage collecting routes were our performance routes. 6 theatre-makers devised site-specific and interactive performances according to the characteristics of the space and the habits of the sanitation workers and the local residents. Sanitation workers were the collaborator performers in this project, while passers-by and residents dumping their household garbage were spectators and participants at the same time.
When street performances were taking place, the program Story Bus happened in a mini bus with a senior sanitation worker tour-guiding the audience passengers. The route and the activities happening in the tour were discussed and rehearsed in advance by a theatre director and that sanitation worker. The audience was invited to view the neighborhood from that worker’s personal perspective.
This “bridging” project aims at re-connecting and re-introducing citizens and sanitation workers and among themselves by giving a tweak to the everyday routine of the urban landscape.
