An Art Center and Its Non-Art Employees

An Art Center and Its Non-Art Employees

This work-in-process was subsidized by the funding initiative of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Taipei City Government. The fund was aimed to support the work’s research and development phase. A try-out was conducted within team members only.

The concept is that a group of theatre artists collaborate with employees who work in an art institution but whose professional background is defined as nothing to do with art. One artist works with one employee. The aimed collaboration outcome is a series of short contemporary performances which can be participated by audience members as an alternative guided tour of that art institute. This performance project tries to reveal the big structure behind each individual who usually works from a marginal position. From their everyday experience, we would also like to examine the relations between us/art practitioners and art itself.

There were nine theatre makers joining in this project. We chose the employees of Taipei Fine Art Museum as our targeted collaborators. After receiving consent from the management of TFAM, we started visiting and interviewing the museum’s “non-art” employees. The employees we had talked with ranged from official civil servants to temp workers. Their professions included gardening, audio-visual mechanics, engineering, government document archiving, cleaning, and security. There were five to six employees agreeing on the collaboration, and only three of them continued to work with us till the internal try-out in November 2017.

Artists: Yu-jing Wang, Jerome Wang, George Lin, Yulia Chen, Blue Chen, Jimi Zhang, Kappa Tseng, Shin-ning Tsou, Corinne Hsiao
TFAM employees: Yaping Chen, Janet Tsai, Franco Liu
Concept and coordination: Yoyo Kung

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Taipei Fine Art Museum.
